After leading 31-17 in the fourth quarter, Miami held on for a 31-30 victory. Nebraska pulled to within one with 00:48 left to play, but a two-point conversion attempt by Nebraska failed when quarterback Turner Gill's pass was tipped away by Miami safety Ken Calhoun. DORSEY HIGH OVERPOWERS CRENSHAW HIGH 27-3 IN ANNUAL SOUL BOWL EXTRAVAGANZA

Dorsey High Dons faced Crenshaw High Cougars on a fantastic, damp night in Westchester, California. This yearly game was also Dorsey's homecoming. The two schools have had an annual rivalry for decades. Although they are only three miles apart, this game has attracted enthusiasm in both neighborhoods and bragging rights for generations.
There was a temporary lull in the excitement of this game due to both schools' programs not performing well. The rivalry had been affected by a demographic change and the loss of families once part of both proud communities.
This was due to a need for more interest in talented students trying out for their teams. Dorsey dominated the 1980s and 1990s rivalry, winning four City Section titles. However, Crenshaw regained the edge, winning back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010 and another in 2013.
Both teams' offenses started slowly due to Westchester's slippery, worn-down football field. Crenshaw started out on offense. But, after a four-and-out, Dorsey took the field on offense. After running several option plays, Dorsey ran a dive on a second and eleven. A group of Crenshaw defenders tackled the Dorsey running back and stripped him for a fumble return to the ten-yard line.
After failing to score a touchdown, Crenshaw coach Robert Garrett elected to kick a successful field goal, which gave Crenshaw a 3-0 lead. Dorsey's offense could only get into a good rhythm around 7:27 in the second quarter.
The Dons scored both first-half touchdowns on running plays to make it a 12-3 lead. At 5:15, left in the second quarter, running back Ja'Marion Broughton showed a burst of speed and turned the corner for a 53-yard touchdown.
Dorsey's head coach, Stafon Johnson, fired up his team on the sidelines after the two scores. His team accrued several penalties, stalling their offensive drives. Johnson starred as a running back at USC from 2006 through 2009, rushing for a career total of 1552 yards.
Johnson stated that "his team had to acclimate to the field and atmosphere." His team had a couple of mishaps early on, but "big players make big plays." We have to control what we can control."
Crenshaw's offense could not move the ball effectively on Dorsey's stout and stingy defense throughout the first half.
In the third quarter, Dorsey received the ball, which was fielded by kick returner Deuce Johnson, the son of Stafon Johnson. Johnson cut back and weaved while avoiding multiple Crenshaw tacklers for an 80-yard touchdown run. Johnson dipped into the middle of the field, broke several tackles, and stayed on his feet. He raced down the middle of the field untouched.
Both teams played tough defense, but Dorsey reached the end zone again, scoring 28-3 with 11:35 left in the third quarter. The final score was 28-3.
Crenshaw's offense and defense fought courageously and valiantly until the end. They never quit or gave up trying to score. This is the personality of their coach, Robert Garrett, who has coached this team for 37 years.
Garrett said he was proud of his kids and that "Dorsey was a better team than us tonight. "He liked his team's composure, attitude, and intensity." He is grateful to lead young men to build their character more than football."

PARAMOUNT HIGH SCHOOL VS CARSON HIGH 9/13.
FINAL SCORE CARSON 36-0 GAME RECAP
By Derek Stewart
DC Stewart Media Group
The Carson High Colts football team record improved to 2-2 on Friday, 9/13, due to a fine-tuned offense and stingy defense, which led to a 36-0 victory. On offense, big-play quarterback #12 Chris Fields III led a well-balanced, potent offensive attack against a Paramount High Pirates overmatched defense.
Fields III passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 11.2 yards per attempt. He also rushed for 54 yards on only five carries. Carson receiver #6 Jahgory Barnes was Fields III's top target, picking up 103 receiving yards and a touchdown. This includes a 60-yard reception to set up another Carson touchdown.
A mixture of Carson's running and passing games kept Paramount's defense guessing. Carson's running back, Adam Madison, racked up several bruising runs, which amassed 70 rushing yards and 2 TDs; his yards per carry averaged 5.1.
The Colts defense was led by DB # 4 Troy Taulua, who had two interceptions in the game. He finished the game with two solo tackles, ten assists, and 12 tackles. Carson's pass rush and run-stopping abilities were displayed throughout the game.
Carson coach Mike Christensen said, "His team's shutout win was good and moving in the right direction." But he stressed that his team's execution on both sides of the ball must improve."
Paramount High entered the game 3-0 with big wins over Santa Ana High, Compton High, and Fairfax High schools. However, their offense could not sustain any drives and momentum running or passing.
Pirates running back # 8 Dae'Jon Massey was held to low yardage* by the Colts' aggressive defensive line. Quarterback # 13 Nicholas Hernandez could not produce any long time-of-possession drives* in the game. Hernandez was replaced in the second half by QB #15 Zechariah Moreno, who also faced a vaunted pass rush by Carson.*
One team will face an opponent this week. Carson will travel to North High School on Friday, 9/20. Paramount will have a bye week and play Venice High School on 9/27.
